This paper is about students I teach and how modern technology can affect them. It is a call for cross-culture awareness and thinking about the consequences that modern technologies can have before using them a classroom.

This paper shows how the question of whether a technology is making students "smarter" or "dumber" is misleading. The correct question, and way to think about technology integration, is "How do different technologies cause us to think, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each, and how can an educator utilize each technology to benefit student learning?"
|
This paper advocates for the importance of teachers in computer-based education and discusses the theory of a "Mediated Learning Environment" (MLE). Students must experience technology through the influence of the teacher, instead of being given full freedom to do anything they want with the technology.

This essay describes the process, both technical and cognitive, that went into creating this portfolio.

MSED Proficiencies
2. MSEd graduates will be able to express themselves competently in writing
Writing is something I take very seriously, and I strive to make my writing clearer, more concise, and accessible to both academics and non-academics, as I hope is evidenced in the essays I have included. I take stands in my writing because I believe strongly on these topics and want to participate in the academic discussions surrounding them.
4. MSEd graduates will be conversant in the literature and research of their discipline
One of the enjoyable parts of the MSED:IT program at Western Oregon is that it gave me the opportunity to read many of the important writings regarding technology in education. Keeping up with the theories and ideas surrounding ed tech will be important to me moving forward. As I exit the program, I will also be entering a doctorate program in educational technology at Boise State University, giving me the opportunity to both continue my learning and understanding of educational technology, as well as giving me the opportunity to contribute my own ideas to the broader conversation.
